What Is Personalized, Social-Emotional Learning?

Love School and I have been in a back-and-forth conversation for a number of years now.

And by “conversation,” I mean a lot of listening.

A lot of contemplation. A lot of noticing. A lot of asking: What is needed? What am I uniquely equipped to offer? What wants to emerge through this work?

Love School has evolved through that ongoing dialogue—responding to what I notice in the world while staying in relationship with my own skills, passions, experience, and capacity to serve.

The newest iteration of that work is something I’m calling Personalized, Social-Emotional Learning.

Okay… but what does that actually mean?

It means we start with the child.

Rather than beginning with a predetermined curriculum and asking a child to fit into it, we begin by getting curious about who they are.

The process begins with a discovery call with the parent. From there, both parent and child complete a questionnaire designed to help me understand the child’s interests, strengths, learning preferences, and areas where they feel curious about or ready to grow.

Then, we begin to build.

These personalized learning journeys are available both virtually and in person, allowing us to create a learning environment that works for each child and family.

I design a learning journey that evolves as I get to know the student. After an initial period of discovery, the student chooses a project they feel genuinely inspired to create, based on a theme they’re excited to explore more deeply.

They choose the medium. They help shape the direction. And I support them in project management, creative development, reflection, and bringing their ideas into form.

The goal isn't simply to complete a project.

It’s to experience what it feels like to have an idea, follow your curiosity, encounter challenges, make choices, create something meaningful, and discover more about yourself along the way.

And the learning doesn't begin when the project begins.

Each session includes a mindfulness or grounding practice to help students develop greater awareness of—and capacity to regulate—their nervous systems.

We also make space for a check-in around what’s happening in their hearts and minds.

Because sometimes a child arrives with a difficult friendship interaction, a disappointment, an exciting discovery, a worry, a question, or simply a lot of feelings.

I don't want those experiences to be something they have to leave at the door in order to “learn.”

They are part of the learning.

Love School is designed to be a space where children can reflect, process, relate, and create.

Why personalized learning?

The world children are growing up in is changing rapidly. The skills, careers, technologies, and ways of working that will shape their adulthood are not all things we can predict.

What we can nurture is the person who will meet that future.

A child who knows themselves.

A child who can recognize their strengths and trust their own ideas.

A child who can navigate emotions, relationships, uncertainty, and challenge.

A child who believes they are a person of value—and that they have something meaningful to contribute.

I believe education has an opportunity to nurture those qualities alongside academic knowledge.

Each child is extraordinarily unique. They bring different strengths, ways of thinking, interests, questions, sensitivities, and ways of making meaning. When those qualities are noticed and nurtured, learning becomes something more than the acquisition of information.

It becomes a place to discover who you are.

And that's what Love School is ultimately about.

Creating learning experiences that are responsive to the child in front of me—experiences that can adapt to their strengths, needs, curiosity, and growth.

Planting seeds of self-knowledge, self-trust, creativity, connection, and belonging.

And giving young people the experience of being met as the whole person they already are.
